Saint Joseph was the son of Jacob (Mt 1:16) of the "house and lineage of David" (Lk 2:4). Although descended from royalty, Joseph worked as a carpenter (Mt 13:55) and was not wealthy (Lk 2:24, Lev 12:2-8). Joseph lived with Jesus and Mary in Nazareth (Mt 2:23). According to tradition, he predecessed both of them.
In sacred art, St. Joseph is often depicted holding a carpenter's square, representative of his occupation, and a lily, symbol of chastity and purity because of its spotless white color.
